The 7th African Conference on Sexual Health and Rights provided space to advance the continental dialogue on demographic dividend. This conference aside from offering a space to advance dialogue also provided an opportunity to share research outcomes and best practices. The advocacy, research and programming that has drive the demographic dividend has for the most part been country driven. This illustrates the political will that Africa has invested in recognizing young people as key actors in shaping Africa’s development agenda.

High Level Commitment to Africa’s Efforts on realization of Demographic Dividend

The  conference provided a high level platform to advance advocacy and enable various constituencies share their perspectives. This is especially given that the patron of the conference was the First Lady of Ghana Her Excellency Dr. Lordinah Mahama. The conference was officially opened by the President of the republic of Ghana His Excellency John Dramani Mahama. This demonstrates the mobilization that has gone into engaging heads of governments across the continent on the issue of demographic dividend. Topics given attention, right from the youth and women pre-conferences to the main conference included; harmful practices such as Female genital mutilation, child and early forced marriages, comprehensive sexuality education , maternal mortality , innovation and financing, gender equality and digital, social media. These discussions were intended to highlight the steps being made towards realizing demographic dividend in the era of 2030 agenda for sustainable development ( the global blueprint on sustainable development) and Africa’s Agenda 2063.

A robust, forward looking and progressive outcome document

The outcome document reflects the voices, aspirations and puts forward recommendations that would enable Africa make strides in her efforts  towards the realization of the demographic dividend. Represented in the Outcome Document Committee at the 7th African Conference on Sexual Health and Rights were ACCPD colleagues.

The outcome document provides Civil society, private sector, academia and UN Agencies with an advocacy tool and resource that would enable us make strides in placing adolescents and young people’s needs at the center of our efforts towards realization of demographic dividend.
